Position Overview
The Library Assistant supports the daily operations of the school library/media center by assisting students and staff, maintaining materials, and helping create an organized, welcoming, and resource-rich environment that promotes literacy and learning. This role may also include supervision of the In-School Suspension (ISS) program and support with general school operations.
Key Responsibilities
Library Operations
- Assist with the circulation of materials (check-in/check-out, holds, overdue notices)
- Shelve and organize books, ensuring proper classification and order
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the library space
- Process new materials (labeling, covering, cataloging support)
Student & Staff Support
- Help students locate books and resources appropriate to their reading level and interests
- Support teachers with instructional materials, research needs, and class visits
- Assist with small groups or individual students during library time
In-School Suspension (ISS) Program
- Supervise students assigned to ISS in a structured and orderly environment
- Ensure students remain on task and follow ISS expectations
- Coordinate with teachers to collect and distribute student assignments
- Monitor behavior and document student progress throughout the ISS placement
- Facilitate student reflection activities focused on accountability and improved decision-making
Technology & Resources
- Support basic troubleshooting of library technology (computers, printers, media equipment)
- Assist students with digital resources, databases, and research tools
Programming & Engagement
- Support library lessons, literacy activities, and special events (book fairs, reading challenges, author visits)
- Help create displays that promote reading and highlight library resources
Clerical & Administrative Tasks
- Maintain records, inventory, and reports as needed
- Assist with communication to staff and families regarding library updates and events
School Operations Support
- Assist with morning and afternoon carpool duties as assigned
- Perform other duties as assigned by administration
Qualifications
- High school diploma required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred
- Experience working with children in a school setting preferred
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Basic technology skills (Google Workspace, library systems, etc.)
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff and build positive relationships with students
